articles In Praise of Porridge By Áine Marie Reilly It is no secret that a bowl of porridge provides a warming and nourishing breakfast on a cold morning, but did you know that the humble oat is one of the most useful and nourishing medicinal foods you can eat? Rich in vitamins and minerals, particularly vitamin B complex, silica and calcium, oats (Avena sativa) were traditionally fed to horses to increase strength and stamina. They have a similar effect on humans and are particularly useful during periods of stress, exhaustion or convalescence from illness. The nutritional properties of oats affect the whole body, but the nervous system in particular seems to benefit from their restoring and strengthening powers. They are supportive during times of stress (such as when preparing for exams or facing challenges at work) and they are fortifying during times of recovery. Used long term, they relieve fatigue and lift the spirits. Oats are very helpful during withdrawal from various drugs such as nicotine, alcohol and prescription medicines, and are extremely useful for various conditions affecting the nervous system, such as depression, multiple sclerosis and M.E. . Oats have a low glycaemic index (GI). In other words they release their energy slowly, which keeps blood sugar levels stable and helps to reduce hunger pangs and sweet cravings. Oats are also low in gluten, a protein found in other grains such as wheat, which many people in this country do not tolerate very well. They contain soluble fibre which keeps the digestive system healthy and reduces the amount of cholesterol absorbed from food. Oats are very beneficial for the skin, and are even suitable for very sensitive skins. Oatmeal soaked in water makes a very good and cost-effective face mask: The vitamins and minerals nourish and soften the skin, while the fibre gently removes dead cells, revealing a beautiful complexion. A handful of oats tied in muslin (or an old pair of tights) and hung under the hot tap while running the bath benefits the skin of the entire body. It is soothing and healing for adults and children with conditions such as eczema and psoriasis. To benefit from the healing powers of oats, experiment with using them in your skin-care routine and try to include some in your diet every day. Porridge makes an excellent start to the day in winter, and can be made more interesting by adding some honey, a pinch of cinnamon or some grated apple. During the summer months, try an oat-based muesli with added fruit, nuts and seeds. During the day, oatcakes with a variety of toppings are a healthy alternative to bread, and oat flapjacks provide a tasty treat. Unfortunately, people with coeliac disease are generally unable to tolerate even the small amount of gluten which is present in oats. For these individuals and anyone who dislikes the taste of oats, tinctures or juice made from the straw are gluten free and available from most pharmacies and health food shops.
